BVFD Hosts Southern Humboldt FFT1 Academy

On April 5 and 6th, BVFD concluded the Southern Humboldt Firefighter Type 1 Academy with a S-211 (Portable Pumps and Water Use) course. Saturday, participants spent the day in our firehouse classroom reviewing the intricacies of 2- and 4-stroke motors, friction loss in various diameter hoses and the capabilities of different pumps. On Sunday, we moved outdoors to apply these lessons in the field.

This Academy is part of a larger regional effort aimed at strengthening local fire resilience through technical fire service training and NWCG certification opportunities. A big thank you to everyone who dedicated their time to train with us! With another fire season always just around the corner here on the North Coast, we’re grateful for the continued collaboration.

Special thanks to Redway Fire for bringing Water Tender 5862 with pumps and portable folding tank, Shelter Cove Fire and Salmon Creek Fire for providing sprinkler kits and more pumps, to Garberville Fire for helping to organize the structure protection group, to the Humboldt Co Prescribed Burn Association for lending their two “pumpkin” water tanks, and Beginnings Inc. for allowing us to use the school grounds for the field day!

This was the 3rd weekend in a row that BVFD has hosted trainings that serve the greater fire service community in Southern Humboldt, which are made possible thanks to logistical support and financial contributions by; The University of California Cooperative Extension, State Coastal Conservancy, California Climate Initiative, Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association with grant funding through CalFire, the Humboldt Co Resource Conservation District, the Redwood Coast Energy Authority, California State Parks and Humboldt Redwood State Park.
